Sleepers
The steel rails rest on sleepers.
These may be made of wood or concrete.
The rails are held in place by chairs which are bolted to the sleepers.
The sleepers are embedded in ballast, a thick layer of stone chippings.
As an inspector, you will need to check that the sleepers are correctly spaced. It could be dangerous if the sleepers are too far apart.
The easiest way to do this is to count how many sleepers there are beneath a pair of rails.
The length of a rail is 18 metres.
Sleepers are spaced out at 60cm intervals.
